Toyota to Manufacture a New Battery Electric Vehicle in Kolín

Toyota Motor Europe (TME) will launch production of a new battery electric vehicle at the Toyota Motor Manufacturing Czech Republic (TMMCZ) plant in Kolín. The announcement was made at a ceremonial event at the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic by Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Minister of Industry and Trade Lukáš Vlček, together with Yoshihiro Nakata, President of TME.

This step also represents a significant investment, as the TMMCZ plant in Kolín will be expanded from its original 152,032 m² to 173,202 m² in order to start production of the new vehicle, including the relevant batteries, as well as to install a new paint shop and welding line.

Financing for the construction of the new production line for battery electric vehicles will be secured through Toyota’s new capital expenditures amounting to approximately €680 million, including an investment incentive from the Czech government of up to €64 million for a dedicated battery assembly facility. For Toyota, this decision reaffirms its multi-pathway approach to zero-emission mobility, aiming to achieve carbon neutrality in Europe by 2040.

“I am very pleased that the Czech Republic has managed to secure such a significant foreign investor as Toyota, even though other countries were competing for this investment in electric vehicle production. This investment not only expands existing production in Kolín but also represents an important step toward a higher technological level and the long-term preservation of automotive manufacturing in our country. The automotive industry makes up roughly 10% of our GDP, and if we want to maintain it, we must modernize it systematically. Projects like this are crucial for the future of the Czech automotive industry – they increase its competitiveness, support innovation, and at the same time create new skilled jobs. In this case, 245 new positions will be created in the region. Foreign investments are the result of our long-term efforts, and we will continue to work to ensure that the Czech Republic remains a strong country able to compete in both Europe and globally,” said Petr Fiala, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic.

“This great success for the Czech Republic – that Toyota will produce not only electric vehicles but also complete battery systems in Kolín – is the result of a series of negotiations that my team and I conducted in Japan and Europe. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our partners at Toyota for their constructive cooperation throughout the process. We succeeded in the tough competition from other European and Asian countries, which once again proves that thanks to its stable and predictable business environment, good infrastructure, and skilled workforce, the Czech Republic is the best address for business. Toyota’s investment is key not only for the future of the Czech automotive industry but also for the transition of our economy to higher added value, as defined in our Economic Strategy: Czechia into the Top 10. Battery system production will take place within the company’s manufacturing complex, which brings a number of advantages – in addition to reducing emissions, it ensures independence from external suppliers and shortens production time. Thanks to Toyota’s investment, the Czech Republic will also become an important part of the transition to clean mobility. The government supported this overall investment of CZK 17 billion with CZK 1.6 billion, while the estimated benefit for the state is around CZK 6 billion,” said Lukáš Vlček, Minister of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic.

“The start of battery electric vehicle production demonstrates the dedication of our employees and confirms the vision we share with the Czech government to further advance sustainable mobility and innovation. We greatly value this investment and the continued support and recognition from the Czech Republic, while our contribution to Czech society will continue in the spirit of being the ‘Best Company in Town.’ This advanced technology-based project will strengthen our presence in the European market and contribute to the transition toward cleaner and more efficient mobility solutions,” said Yoshihiro Nakata, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe.

Toyota currently manufactures the Aygo X and Yaris Hybrid models at TMMCZ, with a production capacity of approximately 220,000 vehicles per year. From November 2025, the Toyota Aygo X will be produced exclusively in the hybrid version. With the launch of battery electric vehicle production, the plant’s potential capacity will increase to allow for production of additional models under the multi-pathway strategy, and the number of direct employees will rise, bringing similar benefits to the entire supply chain, as most parts will be sourced from suppliers in the Czech Republic.

TMMCZ has a long tradition in the Czech Republic, going back more than 20 years, during which the company has produced over 4.5 million vehicles. Toyota began production of the Aygo here in 2002, when the plant was still a joint venture. In 2021, Toyota took over the plant fully and has gradually expanded its activities – today, TMMCZ is one of the largest employers in the Central Bohemian region, with approximately 3,200 employees and 65% of parts sourced from Czech suppliers. TMMCZ is also home to Toyota’s first European logistics center, the “Mega Hub,” established in 2024 to supply vehicles to Toyota and Lexus dealers in Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and the Czech Republic – a total of six Central European markets.

Toyota’s investments in TMMCZ to date:

  • 2002–2005: Start of operations and production at the new plant: €1.069 billion
  • 2020–2021: Expansion of the plant’s capacity for production of Yaris and Aygo X models on the TNGA platform: €184 million
